Pretty self explanatory I think :)

Pretty self explanatory I think 🙂

Just one thing – when words are written in lower case, it means that they don’t represent a proper word – for instance 日 /rì/ is a component “sun”, “SUN” – as a proper word – is 太阳 /tàiyáng/.

刀 /dāo/ KNIFE can be both, it can be a component like here but it can be used as an independent word as well – and because it can be used as an independent word, it is “A KNIFE”, not “a knife”.

It is a small detail, but it will make your life easier as you will encounter post like this one more often.

You probably know that 礼物 /lǐwù/ is A PRESENT, A GIFT.

What you might not know is that 礼 /lǐ/ means A RITUAL and 物 /wù/ is AN OBJECT – so A PRESENT is in fact a RITUAL OBJECT.

That makes sense because the word comes from the times when gifts were something that only top state officials were giving to each other – family members and friends (especially in China) not that much.

This graphics was inspired by reading the book WORLD WITHOUT MIND (没有思想的世界)/Méiyǒu sīxiǎng de shìjiè/

The book analyses the damaging influence of huge technology firms such as Facebook, Amazon and Google on our individual and collective mind and on society in general. My highest recommendation!

思想 /sīxiǎng/ is THINKING and I personally perceive it in the sense “THE SUM OF ONE’S THOUGHTS” or THE NETWORK OF INDIVIDUAL THOUGHTS.

You can find it for instance in the term 毛泽东思想 /Máozédōng sīxiǎng/ The Thoughts (The Thinking) of Mao Zedong.

思 /sī/ is a part of 意思 /yìsi/ MEANING, SENSE

想 /xiǎng/ is TO THINK, TO MISS (home or friend), TO WANT (to do something)
