Comparing in Mandarin – 3 simple rules.

1. To compare two things, we use the construction OBJECT A — 比 /bǐ/ — OBJECT B. 比 /bǐ/ is a comparing preposition.

2. Use the “adjective-verb” (大 (to be) BIG, 贵 (to be) EXPENSIVE, 小 (to be) SMALL, etc.) without 很 /hěn/ – not using 很 /hěn/ shifts “adjective-verb” to comparing form.

3. If you want to specify the difference (THIS IS 10 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE…), put it always after the “adjective-verb”.

Simple, right?

面 /miàn/ means A SURFACE but it can also mean A FACE or even A BREAD.

How is that possible?

___ __ _

Primary meaning is A SURFACE or A FLATSIDE

It is a part of words like 上面 /shàngmian/ UPSTAIRS and 外面 /wàimian/ OUTSIDE…

___ __ _

Faces of Chinese (Asian) people are usually flat, because their noses are quite small – so it shouldn’t surprise us that 面 /miàn/ can also mean A FACE as in 丢面 /diūmiàn/ TO LOOSE FACE (more on loosing face later).

___ __ _

When people make NOODLES, they need to knead the dough on something FLAT, that’s why (I think) we find 面 /miàn/ also in the word 面条 /miàntiáo/ NOODLES, 炒面 /chǎomiàn/ FRIED NOODLES etc.

Noodles are made of FLOUR 面粉 /miànfěn/ and BREAD is a FLOUR that we “packed” 面包 / miànbāo/.

— LEARN WORDS IN PRACTICAL SENTENCES &md…

— LEARN WORDS IN PRACTICAL SENTENCES —

— DON’T LEARN ISOLATED WORDS! —

This advice is based on my experience of both – a language student and a language teacher.

To learn isolated words is usually a waste of your time.

Why?

Our brain has to go through tons of informations and when it decides during our sleep what informations to keep and what informations to throw away, it distinguishes if the information is or isn’t connected to something.

The more connections to something else, the more relevant, the more likely to be remembered.

When you learn a word in a sentence, you create a connection to other words and to some situation (and as a side effect you get used to grammatical structures.)

From my experience – every time I want to help my students with recalling particular word, I remind them of the sentence where they encountered it. It always helps!

That’s why there are about 2000 useful sentences with TOP QUALITY AUDIO on chineseffect.com.

VOCABULARY MONDAY:

VOCABULARY MONDAY:

Do you know why Chinese people like the number 8?

Because the pronunciation of 8 八 /bā/ is similar to 发 /fā/ SEND and is a very pro-active and therefor positive word (part of the word TO GET RICH btw).

发现 /fāxiàn/ TO FIND OUT

发生 /fāshēng/ TO HAPPEN

发财 /fācái/ TO GET RICH

发展 /fāzhǎn/ GROWTH

… these are just few examples.
