经 /jīng/ means A CANON but we also find it in many useful words

___ __ _

Do you know what a canon is?

A canon is a book or a set of books that a particular culture sees as essential.

In pre-modern old-school China when a man wanted to become a scholar and a servant of the system, he had to go through (and memorise) a fixed, codified set of books (in former days there were five books, later three other books were added).

This codified set of books is called Confucian canon.

Some of these books have the character 经 /jīng/ in them, like 易经 /yìjīng/ THE BOOK OF CHANGES.

Now it might be easier to understand why the word ALREADY is 已经 /yǐjīng/ – because what has happened is ALREADY mentioned in the 经 /jīng/ CANON.

What has ALREADY happened is something that we have the EXPERIENCE of, EXPERIENCE is 经验 /jīngyàn/.

Comparing in Mandarin – 3 simple rules.

1. To compare two things, we use the construction OBJECT A — 比 /bǐ/ — OBJECT B. 比 /bǐ/ is a comparing preposition.

2. Use the “adjective-verb” (大 (to be) BIG, 贵 (to be) EXPENSIVE, 小 (to be) SMALL, etc.) without 很 /hěn/ – not using 很 /hěn/ shifts “adjective-verb” to comparing form.

3. If you want to specify the difference (THIS IS 10 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE…), put it always after the “adjective-verb”.

Simple, right?

面 /miàn/ means A SURFACE but it can also mean A FACE or even A BREAD.

How is that possible?

___ __ _

Primary meaning is A SURFACE or A FLATSIDE

It is a part of words like 上面 /shàngmian/ UPSTAIRS and 外面 /wàimian/ OUTSIDE…

___ __ _

Faces of Chinese (Asian) people are usually flat, because their noses are quite small – so it shouldn’t surprise us that 面 /miàn/ can also mean A FACE as in 丢面 /diūmiàn/ TO LOOSE FACE (more on loosing face later).

___ __ _

When people make NOODLES, they need to knead the dough on something FLAT, that’s why (I think) we find 面 /miàn/ also in the word 面条 /miàntiáo/ NOODLES, 炒面 /chǎomiàn/ FRIED NOODLES etc.

Noodles are made of FLOUR 面粉 /miànfěn/ and BREAD is a FLOUR that we “packed” 面包 / miànbāo/.

VOCABULARY MONDAY:

Do you know why Chinese people like the number 8?

Because the pronunciation of 8 八 /bā/ is similar to 发 /fā/ SEND and is a very pro-active and therefor positive word (part of the word TO GET RICH btw).

发现 /fāxiàn/ TO FIND OUT

发生 /fāshēng/ TO HAPPEN

发财 /fācái/ TO GET RICH

发展 /fāzhǎn/ GROWTH

被 /bèi/ is an indicator of a PASSIVE FORM

___ __ _

We use 被 /bèi/ to indicate that something has been done to someone by someone else (we don’t need to say by whom).

These things often aren’t pleasant.

我的东西偷了。 /Wǒ de dōngxi bèi tōule./  MY STUFF WAS STOLEN.

小偷抓住了。/Xiǎotōu bèi zhuāzhù le./ THE THIEF WAS CAUGHT.
