Comparing in Mandarin – 3 simple rules.

1. To compare two things, we use the construction OBJECT A — 比 /bǐ/ — OBJECT B. 比 /bǐ/ is a comparing preposition.

2. Use the “adjective-verb” (大 (to be) BIG, 贵 (to be) EXPENSIVE, 小 (to be) SMALL, etc.) without 很 /hěn/ – not using 很 /hěn/ shifts “adjective-verb” to comparing form.

3. If you want to specify the difference (THIS IS 10 TIMES MORE EXPENSIVE…), put it always after the “adjective-verb”.

Simple, right?

If you want to be able to actually speak, there is no way around it – you need to APPROACH the language ACTIVELY.

Forming sentences on your own is very different from passive reading and listening.

When you form your sentences, you obviously need a relevant feedback – either from your friend or a tutor.

You can also use our dynamic interactive sentences – for instance HERE, on the day 7 of our DAY BY DAY learning program.

Sentences are in English, so that you can try to translate them.

After you translated the sentence you CLICK on it to hear AUDIO and see the MANDARIN VERSION.

After you tried it on your own, the correct version of the sentence is much more likely to stay in your memory – especially if you give it some extra time to memorise it and review within 24 hours.

China is on the way to make EVERYONE pay by phone ALL THE TIME for EVERYTHING – even for giving a small change to beggars.

I’m worried that China will eventually make paying by cash impossible in some time – because this will give the system new enormous power.

Imagine that you oppose the system. – What does the system do? – It closes your accounts, so you can’t buy even noodles in the street.

I’m also worried that the governments of other countries (especially EU) will try to do the same thing eventually and there won’t be enough people to oppose it, because – after all – paying by cell phone (or by watch) is so convenient.

And YES, it is convenient.

BUT – digital means TRACKABLE.

You might say that when you don’t buy drugs or other illegal stuff, you don’t need to worry.

But that is just one angle how to look at this.

In my opinion, this isn’t about buying or not buying illegal stuff. This is about PRIVACY.

No central authority should ever have the right to know what and when we buy and how we live.

This is why CASH IS AND WILL BE SO IMPORTANT.
