关 /guān/ means TO CLOSE, but it is also part of the word A RELATIONSHIP 关系 /guānxi/.

When I showed this animation to my grandmother – very talented and in some areas quite well known sculptress and painter (her name is Otilie Suterova) – she said that it is extremely exciting how the character actually looks like a relationship.
And she send me her version of the character the very same day.

I’m happy to present it here because she has had a very big influence on me, I respect her a lot and it’s a pleasure to show her work to you.

WEDNESDAY. Time for grammar with ease and style.

Standard word order is SUBJECT – VERB – OBJECT.

But there are situations when we need to put the object before the verb.

For that we use 把 /bǎ/ – the function of this grammar word is to inform the listener that the object is in the position where (s)he doesn’t expect it to be – in front of a verb.

Situations when we need to put the object before the verb using 把 /bǎ/:

1. verb is modified

Compare:

我 看 书。 /Wǒ kàn shū/ I READ BOOKS.

vs.

这本 书 看完 了。 /Wǒ zhè běn shū kànwán le/ I HAVE FINISHED READING THIS BOOK. (the verb 看 /kàn/ TO READ is modified with 完 /wán/ TO FINISH)

2. we talk about moving the objects or manipulating with them

把 这个 放 在 这里。/Bǎ zhège fàng zài zhèli/ PUT IT HERE.

In this sentence the position behind the verb is occupied by 这里, that’s why we have to put the object it in front of the verb using 把 /bǎ/.
