GRAMMAR WEDNESDAY – preposition 对 /duì/

GRAMMAR WEDNESDAY – preposition 对 /duì/

____ __ _ ___ _ ___ _ _ ___

The primary meaning of 对 /duì/ is OPPOSITE – in the sense THE OPPOSITE SIDE, or even TO OPPOSE something.

If you are often with Chinese people, you often hear this 对 /duì/ in the meaning YES, THAT’S RIGHT.

It sounds illogical, but there is a reason for that.

Imagine that you put two things that are opposite each other close to each other so that they are actually touching – and you find that they FIT just RIGHT. The fact of fitting is 对 /duì/.

____ __ _ ___ _ ___ _ _ ___

Anyway, today is time for grammar, so we will look into another function of this word.

对 /duì/ is a very important preposition.

When you want to say that something is too expensive FOR you or that smoking isn’t good FOR health, you use 对 /duì/.

对 /duì/ if FOR – but not in the sense that we have bought something for someone, but in the situations when we are describing attitude TO something or influence of one thing TO another.

Basically we take a phenomenon and put it OPPOSITE us (or someone or something else), we CONFRONT ourselves with it and say what the result of that confrontation is.

关 /guān/ means TO CLOSE, but it is also part of the word A RELATIONSHIP 关系 /guānxi/.

When I showed this animation to my grandmother – very talented and in some areas quite well known sculptress and painter (her name is Otilie Suterova) – she said that it is extremely exciting how the character actually looks like a relationship.
And she send me her version of the character the very same day.

I’m happy to present it here because she has had a very big influence on me, I respect her a lot and it’s a pleasure to show her work to you.

There is a special site dedicated to 关系 HERE – you will find all possible ways how to use it there.

The character 意 /yì/ consists of 音 /yīn/ sound and 心 /xīn/ heart.

We are looking at the “sound of the heart”.

___ _ __ _ ____ _ _ ___ _ __ __ __ _

Chinese thinking doesn’t see mindand heart-emotionsas two divided phenomenons.

They are connected and both are located in our heart.

Mind produces THOUGHTS and IDEAS.

It has its EXPECTATIONS and when we meet our EXPECTATIONS, we are SATISFIED

When we SHARE IDEAS with someone else, we AGREE.

Our mind (conscious) interprets the world around us and gives it MEANING and SENSE.

In order to work properly, we have to be able to address our ATTENTION.

If we want to succeed in BUSINESS we need to come up with new IDEAS.

We find 意 /yì/ in all these words…

When something has ALREADY happened, we can find a mention of it in A CANON.

So it shouldn’t surprise us that we find the character 经 /jīng/ in the word ALREADY.

When we have ALREADY been through something, we have THE EXPERIENCE.

Faces of Chinese (Asian) people are usually flat, because their noses are quite small – so it shouldn’t surprise us that 面 /miàn/ can also mean A FACE as in 丢面 /diūmiàn/ TO LOOSE FACE (more on loosing face later).

When people make NOODLES, they need to knead the dough on something FLAT, that’s why (I think) we find 面 /miàn/ also in the word 面条 /miàntiáo/ NOODLES, 炒面 /chǎomiàn/ FRIED NOODLES etc.

Noodles are made of FLOUR 面粉 /miànfěn/ and BREAD is a FLOUR that we “packed” 面包 / miànbāo/.
