Look at the character 正 /zhèng/ CORRECT, RIGHT, JUST, PROPER… You see how clean and well-organized it is – no wonder it means CORRECT, JUST.

___ __ _

Interesting thing – in English the word JUST can be used not just in the meaning CORRECT, but also in the meaning JUST NOW. The same principle works in Chinese:

正在 /zhèngzài/ indicates that some action is happening right at the moment that we refer to.

我正在学习汉语 /Wǒ zhèngzài xuéxí hànyǔ/

I’M STUDYING MANDARIN RIGHT NOW

___ __ _

Other words:

正常 /zhèngcháng/ (to be) NORMAL

正确 /zhèngquè/ CORRECT

Learning should always be an inspiring and spirit-elevating activity, not something that you have to force yourself to do.

Therefor learning materials should be something that you are looking forward to – and not just something that you use because there isn’t anything better.

“Good enough” isn’t good enough.

We live in 21st Century and that means that learning materials should finally take full advantage of technical and creative possibilities that are available to us now.

Here is my vision of how it can look.

What do you say?

How about: 行 /xíng/ OK!
___ _ ____ __ _ _ ___

行 /xíng/ means TO GO, but it is used in an abstract sense, that something IS POSSIBLE (that it GOES through)

We find it in useful words:

行李 /xínglí/ A SUITCASE – by the way, can you believe that there is a special page dedicated to LUGGAGE HERE? 🙂

旅行 /lǚxíng/ TO TRAVEL

___ _ __ ___ _ ___ __

The character 行 has another reading (sometimes that happens, but it is quite rare).

The reading is /háng/ and we find it in the word 银行 /yínháng/ A BANK.

By the way, there is a page dedicated to BANK – HERE.

___ _ __ ___ _ ___ __

When you add 2x 土 /tǔ/ GROUND to the character 行, you get 街 /jiē/ A STREET.

多少 /duōshǎo/ HOW MUCH, HOW MANY

多少 /duōshǎo/ HOW MUCH, HOW MANY

___ __ _

Many words in Mandarin are created either by combining synonyms or by combining antonyms. This is the second case.

We think the etymology of this word goes something like this:

People were asking for instance – ARE THERE MANY PEOPLE? or ARE THERE FEW PEOPLE? – so in fact HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE THERE?
