You probably know that 礼物 /lǐwù/ is A PRESENT, A GIFT.

What you might not know is that 礼 /lǐ/ means A RITUAL and 物 /wù/ is AN OBJECT – so A PRESENT is in fact a RITUAL OBJECT.

That makes sense because the word comes from the times when gifts were something that only top state officials were giving to each other – family members and friends (especially in China) not that much.
