VOCAB MONDAY

___ __ _

面 /miàn/ means A SURFACE but it can also mean A FACE or even A BREAD.

How is that possible?

___ __ _

Primary meaning is A SURFACE or A FLATSIDE

It is a part of words like 上面 /shàngmian/ UPSTAIRS and 外面 /wàimian/ OUTSIDE…

___ __ _

Faces of Chinese (Asian) people are usually flat, because their noses are quite small – so it shouldn’t surprise us that 面 /miàn/ can also mean A FACE as in 丢面 /diūmiàn/ TO LOOSE FACE (more on loosing face later).

When people make NOODLES, they need to knead the dough on something FLAT, that’s why (I think) we find 面 /miàn/ also in the word 面条 /miàntiáo/ NOODLES, 炒面 /chǎomiàn/ FRIED NOODLES etc.

Noodles are made of FLOUR 面粉 /miànfěn/ and BREAD is a FLOUR that we “packed” 面包 / miànbāo/.
